Oral Thrush - Symptoms And Treatment
Oral thrush generally refers to the infection caused by yeast fungi that belongs to the genus Candida and affects the mucous membrane in the mouth of the infants. The infection is usually caused by Candia albicans or Candida tropicalis or Candida glabrata. The infection that affects the mouth or throat in adults is referred to as moniliasis or candidosis.
Oral thrush though associated with infection affecting the mouth and oral areas, at times is also wrongly used to portray penile or vaginal Candiasis that affect the genital area. It is common in babies, and can happen especially after being on medication like antibiotics over a period of time. Otherwise, it generally affects people who are ill, especially those who have a weak immune system.
It is caused by Candida fungus. The fungus is found in the skin, mouth and digestive tract of most of the healthy people and is usually kept under check by some other microorganisms like bacteria present in the body. However, the Candida fungus tends to grow and spread out of control in people with certain illness, are under stress, or on medication causing the infection. Medications like antibiotics, corticosteroids, and birth control pills can alter the delicate balance of micro-organisms in the mouth causing the disease
The treatment for oral thrush in adults focuses on two main aspects. The first aim is to improve and strengthen the body’s immune system so that it can function properly and effectively. For example, people suffering with diabetes can get rid off the infection by simply keeping their diabetes under check without taking any special treatment for the infection. The second approach is to treat the infection directly. Your physician may recommend lozenges or an anti-fungal mouthwash initially. However, if the infection is still there after 5-7 days further medications can be prescribed.
