The 5 Strangest Nutritious Foods
Pharmas Health and Medical stated some of the Strangest Nutritious Foods to keep you fit and healthy..
Everyone is trying to eat healthier by adjusting their diet. There are many varieties of nutritious and exotic foods out there, each with a unique history and taste all its own. Surprisingly, some of the most nutritious foods out there may also be some of the strangest.
Arame: It’s highly likely that you have never heard of this rather unique sea vegetable. It’s harvested off the coasts of Japan, and is chock full of essential minerals and vitamins. This surprise from the sea is especially rich in iron and vitamin B. Arame is leafy and green, so you can easily add it to soups or salad for an extra boost of nutrition.
Amaranth: No, this is not another sea vegetable. Aramanth is a grain, and a rather high protein, peppery grain at that. Amaranth is also a sort of “super grain”. It has a higher fiber content than wheat. It also has more nutrients that wheat like vitamins A and C, along with calcium, iron and potassium. It’s also great in aiding digestion– just the thing for anyone recovering from gastrointestinal distress.
Cocoa Nibs: Before chocolate is made into chocolate, it comes from the wild cocoa bean. That is exactly what a cocoa nib is– bits of roasted wild cocoa beans before they have ground down to made into chocolate. Cocoa nibs are loaded with antioxidants. Cocoa nibs are also a wonderful addition to cookies, milkshakes, or ground up with coffee beans to give an extra added dose of antioxidants and a kick of cocoa to your coffee. You can find cocoa nibs at many local retailers and food supermarkets.
Kohlrabi: Chances are very good that you’ve had this odd-looking vegetable in your neighbourhood grocery story before, but you’ve probably never noticed it. Similar to cabbage and broccoli, the kohlrabi is root vegetable that resembles a turnip that is either purple or light green in color and streaked with white stripes. It has a crisp, radish-like flavor and makes an excellent addition to salads, or sauteed in a stir-fry. The best part is that the kohlrabi is packed full of nutrients. Most notably, it is high in potassium and vitamin C, and is particularly rich in cancer fighting phytochemicals.
Yerba Mate: It’s a tea with a strange name. But the health benefits of yerba mate are not so strange at all. According to a study by the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana conducted in 2004, scientists discovered that the high antioxidant content in yerba mate actually promoted cell survival even better than than antioxidant drinks like green tea and red wine. Yerba mate also contains caffeine and xanthine alkaloids much like the mood elevator and muscle relaxant found in chocolate.
