Treadmill Maintenance Tips

July 11th, 2008 by Rajeev Pandey

Treadmills can largely be maintained without the need for a specialist or technician to come out and visit you. Much of what you need to do is just common sense. The main aspects of treadmill maintenance revolve around putting the machine in the correct environment, maintaining the belt and ensuring that it is lubricated.

The area that you place your treadmill is vitally important. Make sure that it is positioned horizontally or the belt can slip over time. You should put your machine on an exercise mat. This will protect the floor, but the real reason is to cut down on the static that is produced by your treadmill motor. This static will attract dust and lint into the motor, which will cut down the efficiency of your machine and make it more prone to breakdown.

The belt of your treadmill should be cleaned on a regular basis. Dirt from shoes can build up in the machine over time and lead to malfunctions. It is a good idea to get exercise shoes that you only use for your treadmill and don’t wear outside. Make regular checks of the alignment of the belt and make adjustments if necessary. The common cause of a misaligned belt is if the treadmill is on an uneven floor, so this should be remedied. Every 2-3 years you should be replacing the belt on your machine.

It is important to reduce the friction between the moving parts of your treadmill to ensure that it works efficiently. But just using any lubricant can do more harm than good. Even some of the commercially available silicon lubricants are not recommended to be used by the manufacturers. The best idea is to check your specific model and manufacturer and see if they recommend lubricating the belt, deck or motor. If they do, make sure that you use the correct type of lubricant.
